Sherlock Holmes II (1908), part of a Danish silent series, is regarded to be the very first full-length ‘sequel’ movie ever in the history of cinema. Given most silent films of the era are considered to be ‘lost’, it is quite difficult to know with absolute certainty, but there seems to be at most one or two ‘sequels’ each year since then. ‘The Fall of a nation’ in 1916 is often touted to be the first Hollywood sequel. They wouldn’t really catch on until the 1970s and 80s when movies like Superman and Godzilla proved to be very profitable for franchising. Today one can barely find a movie that is not a sequel, remake, reboot or spin-off of something else.
The very first post in this blog was about humor, about offence vs intent and the aggressive ‘snowflake’ culture flourishing as of now. But that was people taking offence to a YouTube comedian’s impressions of two famous people, this is regarding a world renowned Hollywood director’s decade old tweets making light of pedophilia and homophobia. So do the same rules still apply?
This is not a review. I don’t think I watch enough movies nor do I know enough of the ins and outs of cinema to be able to analyse if a movie is any good or not. What I can do is tell you what the movie meant to me.
So wakanda movie is Black Panther, you ask? Get it? Try not to smile, now smile. There you go. Oh also, spoiler alert. This is going to be insanely in-depth.
Apparently, Captain America : Civil war is the highest grossing movie of 2016, yet. Well, good for them. This has been a good year for people like me who love other people in spandex and capes kick some serious ass. We began with Deadpool (holy mother of dragons, was that movie good! ) and then came BvS : Dawn of Justice, which albeit ignoring a few gaps in storytelling, was pretty darn impressive merely virtue of its scale , only to be followed by Captain America : Civil war, which saw audience sit in absolute silence through the climatic battle of a superhero movie, that’s a first ! X-Men : Apocalypse has been running for a week now and I’m yet to watch it but I read a whole lot of stuff about how it has polarised the fans and such, must have something different then.
And we’re barely halfway through the year with Suicide Squad and Dr.Strange still on the books. It’s official guys, Geek is the new sexy.Well, at least on screen.
